Rachael Yamagata was born on September 23, 1977. Rachael Yamagata is mixed her father is Japanese American (a Sansei or 3rd generation Japanese American)) and her mother is White.
Rachael Yamagata started out in the funk-fusion band Bumpus in the 90's. They released 2 albums together, but in 2001 Rachael Yamagata take some songs that she had written that didn't fit into Bumpus sound and release a solo album. the next year she was signed to Arista's private music label and released Rachael Yamagata EP.
Happenstance was Rachael Yamagata first full-length solo album and it was released in 2004.
in 2008 Rachael Yamagata released her second album Elephants...Teeth Sinking into Heart. Which is actually a double album with both CDs having a different title and feel. Elephants was more intimate though a little dark and Teeth Sinking into Heart is a more cynical and gritty.
